NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 11) - Broward County's sheriff said Friday he hopes that the people who threw a newborn boy out of a moving car are feeling remorse and will come forward.

Investigators are trying to identify the couple who threw the boy, believed to be less than an hour old, alongside a busy South Florida street Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Ken Jenne said. The car then sped away.




The baby is recourperating in a hospital.


The 8-pound, 2-ounce boy, whose umbilical cord was still attached, survived with minor injuries and was hospitalized in stable condition Friday.

''I would hope nature would take its course and they would feel the guilt of having abandoned this child, putting it at risk, and will come forward,'' Jenne told NBC's ''Today'' show.

A woman stopped and found the baby inside a small plastic bag. She scooped him up and took him to a nearby sheriff's office, and he was transferred to Broward General Medical Center.

The good Samaritan, who originally thought the couple had thrown a puppy out the window, was ''very distraught, very upset,'' Jenne said. The woman's name was not released.

Investigators are searching for a white, older-model large sedan that witnesses observed leaving the scene. The baby's rescuer told investigators she observed a man and woman arguing inside the vehicle. But she saw only the back of their heads, Jenne said, and could not provide a good description.

That irks me deeply because a lot of people who want children and would be great parents can't have kids, and some people who have them are lousy parents and don't deserve children.

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Authorities said Friday that the story of a newborn boy who survived being thrown out of a moving car was made up by a depressed woman.

The 8-pound, 2-ounce boy, who was believed to be less than an hour old and whose umbilical cord was still attached when he came into the custody of authorities on Thursday, was in good condition at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne said at a news conference Friday afternoon that the boy was "absolutely perfect."? Nurses at the hospital have nicknamed him Johnny after the doctor who first treated him Thursday, he said.

Jenne said the baby was taken to a local sheriff's office Thursday by a woman who said she saw it being tossed from a moving car, wrapped in plastic. She claimed that a man and a woman were arguing in the car at the time, he said.

In fact, Jenne said, the Good Samaritan, the woman in the car and the baby's mother were one and the same, identified as Patricia Pokriots, 38, a barmaid for a non-profit fraternal organization.

Pokriots was undergoing a mental competency hearing, Jenne said, adding that there was no indication that drugs were involved. Pokriots, who was arrested in 2002 on an aggravated battery charge, does not want to keep the baby because she fears she could harm him, Jenne said.

The dispensation of the 2002 charge was not immediately known.

This whole story is weird. Just shows the shape of our society. What a shame. I like what is said not as bad as first thought? I mean it was a newborn. It could died no matter what?

A woman who claimed to have witnessed a newborn being thrown from a moving car was the baby's mother and concocted the story as a way to abandon the child and conceal her pregnancy from her family, officials said Friday.
"It's not as horrible as we first thought," Sheriff Ken Jenne said. "The baby was never thrown out of a moving car. This is the case of a disturbed woman who gave birth and did not want to keep her child."
No charges were brought against the woman, 38-year-old Patricia Pokriots. She was committed for psychiatric evaluation under a law that allows for people who are a threat to themselves or others to be held for 72 hours.
On Thursday afternoon, Pokriots dropped an hour-old baby off at a sheriff's station, telling authorities that she had scooped the boy up after seeing him tossed out of a car onto the grass, Jenne said. Pokriots told investigators she saw a couple arguing in a car, then witnessed the woman throwing the child from the passenger side.
Eventually, investigators found inconsistencies in Pokriots' story, and on Friday she acknowledged that she had lied, the sheriff said.
"She has indicated that she does not want the child," Jenne said.

The sheriff said the woman had kept her pregnancy a secret, and had initially planned to take the baby to authorities. State law allows a mother to abandon a baby at any medical facility or fire station within three days of birth.
But she came up with a cover story after seeing two people argue inside their car, the sheriff said. A boy who was playing nearby did see a couple arguing, but never saw them throw anything out, Jenne said.
Pokriots is a barmaid and has an arrest record including an aggravated battery charge. "She said she may be a threat to herself," Jenne said.
